Application period begins September 25 through October 23, 2017.  Written test date is November 4, 2017.


Firefighters are hired by the Board of Fire and Police Commissioners through a series of physical aptitude test, written examination and oral examination.  An eligibility list is established in the department every two years.  As vacancies occur, candidates are hired from the list.  Appointment is subject to satifactorily passing an oral interview, psychological evaluation, background investigation and a thorough medical examination by a licensed physician.

When testing occurs, it is advertised in the local newspaper.  In addition, the information and application forms are made available on the fire department pages on the City's web site.


Additional preference points will be awarded to the applicant in the following area:
Military service in the Armed Forces with an honorable discharge.  An Associate's degree in a fire related field or a Bachelor's degree from an accredited college.  Valid Paramedics license.
Employment - firefighters or firefighter paramedics employed full-time by a fire protection district or by another municipality for at least two (2) years.
