Historic Preservation Commission

Meets the 1st Monday of each month. 
(Has duties and powers dealing with general activities involving landmarks and historic preservation districts as set out in Appendix F., Historic Preservation Ordinance, of the Municipal Code of the City of Jacksonville, Illinois.)

The Historic Preservation Commission of Jacksonville, Illinois consists of eleven city residents including an ex-officio member of the City Council and of the Jacksonville Main Street Program. Our goal is to help preserve and promote the historical and architectural structures in Jacksonville's historic district as well as the rest of our city. The Commission meets on the first Monday of each month, with individual committees meeting separately throughout the month. The committees also include other non-commission members of the community who have an interest in the preservation of Jacksonville.

Members of the Commission also work on individual committees.

Designation Committee - oversees the process of local land marking and the recognition of property owners

Ordinance Committee - working on updating the Commission's Ordinance

Resource Committee - working with the Public Library

Information Committee - working on a list of craftsmen and builders 

The Ordinance Committee is working on updating the Commission's Ordinance to help clarify to homeowners the proper procedures on maintenance and repairs to their historic homes. The Resource Committee is working with the Public Library to make reference materials readily available to the public. The Information Committee is working on a list of craftsmen and builders who are familiar with working on historic buildings.

We hope to keep you up-to-date on what we are doing to help maintain the historic charm of Jacksonville, and we are more than happy to help you help us.

The Commission has resource materials available to the public to help you in repair, restoration and renovation of your historic home. A resource library is being set up at the Jacksonville Public Library to provide specialized information to homeowners on maintaining or researching the history of your home.
